Head Teacher's Blog 20th October 2017

Happy Friday Everyone, and welcome to the last Blog of the first half term.

Another busy week for our students and staff and I have been impressed, as ever, by the atmosphere of calm when I walk around the school during lesson times. Every lesson I visit has students engaged in their learning, working hard and always trying their very best. It makes me so proud to be a part of The Peele.

Today we have appointed our Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputies and 18 Prefects. This followed 2 days of interviews with myself, Mrs King (Head of Year 11) and Mr Everard (Chair of Governors). The standard of interviews was very high, we were all impressed by the skills and qualities demonstrated by our Year 11s. The new post holders are:

Head Girl - Charlotte Drew

Head Boy - Jay Bunn

Deputy Head Girl - Madison Brothwell

Deputy Head Boy - Scott Early

Our new prefects will be announced in my next Blog.

Some information from Mrs Turkson-Jones about the Junior Teaching and Learning Team:

Our new Junior T&L team has now officially been launched across the College. 7 year 10 students: Ben Gilbert, Georgie Eldridge, Elouise Youngs, Jodie Lenton, Kyra Haime, Lucy Crisp and Jay Sullivan. All are passionate about sharing their views on learning and volunteered to form a group, dedicated to listening to the views of their fellow students and and to improving learning experiences in every classroom, lab and sports area. The team have set up a post box and devised feedback sheets which are now in every form room. Students are encouraged to give their views and share experiences anonymously and post these in the box. Junior T&L team members carry notebooks and are already being approached by their peers with comments about learning. Today the post box was opened for the first time and the team met to share and discuss other’s feedback. There was a clear sense of excitement and genuine commitment, when discussing actions moving forward, “problem, solution” being the mantra moving forwards.

Some information about upcoming events now. We are holding a Careers Fair on 15th November from 4.30pm to 7.30pm. This will involve a variety of providers of Post 16 education as well as Universities, the Armed Forces and National Citizens Service. During the evening there will be stalls and representatives for various local 6th Forms and Colleges and there will also be presentations about University life and Apprenticeships. Year 9-11 students will have the opportunity to visit the fair during the day as well. Please do come along and join us to find out about the opportunities that are open to our students when they move on from The Peele.

Our Junior Leadership Team are in the process of coordinating a week of fundraising for Children in Need - running from 13th to 17th November. This week they launched a poster competition - deadline 31st October and I am assured that the prizes are good! The week will culminate in Fancy Dress Friday on 17th November - prizes for the best costumes and non-uniform for £1 if you don't wish to wear Fancy Dress.

Yesterday we had Wear it Pink for Breast Cancer Research. We raised £192.05 for this important cause - thank you to everyone who joined in with pink items, there were some interesting wigs in reception!!

Finally I would like to say a huge Thank You to you all for your support during my first half term as Head Teacher. I have loved every minute and I can honestly say this is the best school I know. I wish you all a happy, restful and safe Half Term. See you all on Tuesday 31st October as we start Term 2.
